GBIF in Finland
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) aims at making the world's scientific biodiversity data freely and universally available through Internet for benefits to science, society and a sustainable future. Visit the GBIF Website to get more information, or GBIF Data Portal to access the data. Currently, there are nearly 300 data providers in GBIF network in 40 countries. They serve over 170 million records of biodiversity data from 7000 databases or datasets.Integrated GBIF data from or about Finland can be accessed through the following links:
| All data gathered within Finland (currently from 130 datasets worldwide) | |
| Data from all Finnish providers (currently 33 datasets and 1,678,000 records) | |
| Data sharing with Finland by foreign countries and international organisations | |
| Data sharing with the countries of origin by Finland |
Finland is a Participant in GBIF since 2002. In every GBIF country the activities are coordinated by a National Node. The Node helps data providers to get started and solve technical problems, and users to access and utilise the data. Contact us or read this Finnish language document, if you want to become part of the GBIF network and share your dataset with the worldwide scientific community. We are also available to visit your site and give lectures and training about biodiversity informatics and GBIF solutions.
In addition to the Node, there is a number of GBIF Data Providers in Finland. Follow the below links to access their data:
| Finnish Museum of Natural History | |
| Jyväskylä University Museum | |
| University of Helsinki, Department of Applied Biology | |
| University of Turku |
The GBIF Node carries out a number of projects. Follow the links above to see their details.
In spring and summer 2008, the project carried out, in cooperation with the Environmental Administration, an update of the metadatabase of Finnish collections, biodiversity surveys, databases, and datasets that biodiversity data. Follow this link to the home page of this survey (only in Finnish).
GBIF Finland Node is coordinating a joint Nordic project on LSID e-infrastructures for scientific names and concepts -- see the project plan. This project has been funded by NordForsk for 2008-2010.
